Photon News October 1995

We apologise for the un-edited nature of this. We are now getting anything up to 100 news release of 'usable' type every month - the magazine would be stuffed with them - while at the same time fewer and fewer companies have advertising schedules, or employ ad agents. I have no idea how they expect magazines to be able to print dozens of pages of free publicity on today's slim revenues. However, it costs almost nothing to bring you all this fascinating stuff on the Web.

Think of this experience as surfing the Net and encountering all the flotsam, jetsam, used condoms, coliform bacteria, lower gut viruses, atomic fallout, WWII phosphorus barrels, oiled gulls and other stuff you meet face-to-faeces when you surf for REAL in Britain. This is the Webpublishing equivalent. We have cut THEIR three pages down to OUR one paragraph in every case. Some items with pix are at the top. The order of the rest does not reflect their merits. Enjoy!

You can obtain an accurate color print and disk with an original TIFF file for this shot from British imaging/photo lab Colab, for 15 pounds GB, 10.00 of this refunded against a future job. A great idea. We think it is slightly low in contrast/gamma/saturation for G1.8 standard monitors and definitely very weak for G1.4, but if it works for them?

BLUES BEGONE!

CALIBRATION of computer monitors so that they more or less match each other is the most important single aspect of colour management'. Now that very few programs include a scan of a photo and an example to match it to - which used to be the case with Color Studio, Photoshop and Cachet - Colab has seized the initiative and created a disk with a calibrated file and a matching colour print. Their monitor kit enables rough calibration of any computer which can read the Mac/PC compatible TIFF file, by comparing your screen with the print, and adjusting the brightness and contrast controls. The kit costs 15.00 including a 10.00 discount off the customer's next Colab digital bureau job. Colab has appointed Mark Stephenson, formerly with Macintosh dealer Berkeley Computers, as Digital Imaging Manager.

FUJI AF 645

THE LONG-AWAITED Fuji GA645, an autofocus revision of the outstandingly rugged and popular G645S semi-wide-angle rollfilm rangefinder camera, is about to hit the shops with a price tag of around 1,000 - almost double that of its manual focus predecessor. However, the GA adds motorized film loading and winding, and a hybrd passive/active AF system for its 60mm 4 lens. Minimum focus is reduced to only 70cm for normal work and down to 20cm with a close-up kit. It accepts 120 or 220 film, has auto parallax correction, finder readouts of exposure control settings and focus distance, and offers P, A and M modes. A built-in flash pops up to increase flash to lens distance, and there is a remarkably valuable data back facility which imprints comprehensive data including date, time and exposure settings between the frames on the roll. A high-power TTL flash unit is promised shortly.

NAME GAME

THE RIGHT MONICKER is critical in these days of brand wars - but counterfeiters clearly thought that colour, logos and graphic styling will be enough to con buyers when they manufactured some bootleg film and labelled it 'Monika' in imitation of Konica'. Needless to say the stuff surfaced in the North-East of England, where such manufacturing enterprises are entirely unknown.

JOE's goes fuji

FUJI HUNT chemicals and their OASIS processing monitoring system for E-6 development have been adopted by top London lab Joe's Basement following trials in which it is claimed by Fuji Hunt they found the company's E-6 optimised both Kodak and Fuji filmstock results. One of the common reasons quoted by professionals for dissatisfaction with lab process standards is that they are geared mainly to one film type, depending on the lab. Some labs even run separate lines for Kodak and Fuji. Fuji Hunt has conducted an industry survey which concludes that a well-run process with the correct aim-points can cope with both major brands.

new at nikon

NIKON'S Electronic Imaging Division, of growing importance, has appointed Chris Hoare as sales manager to develop the future of their digital cameras and scanners. Chris was previously with monitor and hard drive manufacturer Formac and has a good knowledge of the market; we've had a few conversations and can report that for once, here's a photographic industry person thoroughly familiar with the concerns of digital system users. The price of the Scantouch AX1200 flatbed scanner, which we have been using for all our print repro and some tranny work over the last few months, has been cut to 999 ex VAT and we've even seen some ex-demo Coolscans (replaced by the much faster Super) going for as little as 500.

first station'

THE FIRST Kodak Digital Print Station in Britain has been installed by Dawson Strange Photography of Cobham in Surrey. The system, which includes a print scanner and a dye sublimation printer with a touch-screen monitor and software, enables customers to make their own digital copies and print them one, two, four or even nine-up on a sheet. The cost is only 10,300 + VAT including three months' warranty for the entire basic system, with add-on CD-ROM and film scanner options. Eric Dawson Strange said that the simple design meant that only 30 minutes training was needed for staff to get the kit up and running. In the USA, Kodak is being lobbied by photographic organisations to prevent public use of the Digital Print Station without staff supervision, because of the incidence of copyright breaches, but has so far not responded to calls to remove public access to the systems in popular instant-print retail chains.
